Her father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High School in 1981. Models appeared in commercials for some time before moving out into Los Angeles. Her first assignment was as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials.
